Where to check import requirements before sending a parcel

Find the destination customs authority and check which rules apply at the border and which restrictions come from the shipping service.

Check two things before you submit a parcel. Ask the agent or carrier whether the route accepts your items. Then check the destination’s customs guidance for restrictions, paperwork and possible charges. Keep the itemized invoice and declare the contents and values accurately.

Start with the destination’s official guidance

  • United States. Check how international post is processed and ask the carrier which instructions apply if your route uses a courier. U.S. Customs and Border Protection
  • United Kingdom. Check the guidance for goods sent from abroad, including which charges may be due and who collects them. GOV.UK
  • European Union. Check the Commission’s guidance on purchases from outside the EU, including VAT and clearance charges. European Commission online import guidance
  • Canada. Use the CBSA guidance for your transport method. Mail and courier have separate references. CBSA mail guidance · CBSA courier guidance
  • Australia. Check how mail imports are assessed and when documents may be required. Australian Border Force

Get the route’s terms in writing

Ask which charges, if any, the shipping quote includes and who contacts you if documents or payment are needed. Compare that answer with the authority’s current guidance for your contents, transport method and value. Keep the reply with the parcel receipt so you can check it if you receive a charge notice later.
