Buying guide
Lay a hoodie you already wear flat and measure across the chest below the armholes. Take body length from the same starting point as the seller’s diagram. Use a hoodie that fits over your usual base layer as the reference if you plan to layer.
A set-in sleeve may be measured from the shoulder seam. A raglan sleeve may be measured from the collar or the back of the neck. Ask for the start point before comparing the two charts.
For a zip-up, ask for a photo with the zipper closed. Look for a zipper that lies flat and pocket openings that line up across the front. If the listing shows a two-way zipper, check that both sliders are visible.
Product research
Pilling is the formation of small balls of fiber on the fabric surface. In photos of a worn sample, look at the sleeve areas that rub against the body and the areas under a bag strap. A photo of a new hoodie shows its starting texture. A worn sample can show how that fabric changed with use.
If a seller gives a pilling grade, ask which test was used and whether the fabric had been washed before testing. ASTM’s Martindale method rates a tested sample against visual references. Compare grades taken under the same test conditions. If the listing provides only a phrase such as anti-pilling, ask for the test details or treat the claim as unconfirmed.

Ask for the relaxed width across the bottom hem and a photo showing whether it has a ribbed band, a drawcord or a straight finish. Compare it with the hem of a hoodie you already wear. Chest width alone gives little indication of where the bottom will sit.
Ask for the hood depth from the face opening to the back seam and a side photo with the hood up. If possible, compare those measurements with a hood that already fits over your cap. A wide face opening can still have limited room front to back.
Compare your phone with the pocket opening and the usable depth. A photo with the pocket stretched open can help you see how the seam narrows inside. If you carry the phone while walking, check whether the pocket has a closure.
