Eyewear frame measurements guide

Start with a frame that fits

Use the numbers printed inside the temple of a frame you already wear as a reference. Ask for lens width, bridge width and temple length separately. Also compare the overall front width because frames with similar lens widths can sit differently.

Check the bridge and temples in photos

Look for a front view and a view of the inside of the frame. Check whether the bridge has separate nose pads and whether both temples open to the same position. Ask for a hinge close-up if the listing photos are unclear.

Confirm the selected lens option

Ask which tint and lens type come with your exact variant and whether a case is included. If a listing makes a claim about lens performance, ask for a specification tied to that model.

Check how photochromic lenses work inside a car

Photochromic lenses darken in response to light. Many standard versions rely on ultraviolet light, so a windshield that filters it can limit how dark they get inside a car. Some lens versions are designed to respond differently behind a windshield. Check the manufacturer’s description for the exact lens version offered.

If driving is one reason you are choosing the lenses, ask your optician how that version behaves in the car and whether it is suitable for the conditions you drive in. An outdoor demonstration shows the lens in that outdoor light. For comparison, ask for information about the same lens behind a windshield and in its clear state.

Eyewear FAQ

Do polarized sunglasses automatically provide UV protection?

Polarization cuts reflected glare. UV protection is a separate lens property. Check the documentation for the exact model and lens option for 100% UV protection. If you cannot verify the claim, ask an optician whether they can test the lenses.

Can I put prescription lenses into any frame?

Ask your optician to assess the exact frame before you order, especially for rimless or wraparound styles. Send the frame model and dimensions and ask whether it can accommodate your prescription and the lens type you want.

How can I check whether a frame will fit in my existing case?

Ask for the frame dimensions with the temples folded. Compare the folded width, height and thickness with the case’s usable internal space. A case may close around a flat frame and be too shallow for a deeply curved one.
