Check usable space against what you carry

Measure your laptop, bottle or notebook and ask for the internal width, height and depth of its intended compartment. For a zippered sleeve, compare the opening width too. A bag can be wide enough outside while the opening is too narrow for your item.

Inspect the areas that take the load

Ask for close photos of where the straps meet the bag, the zipper ends and the handle stitching. If the bag has a removable strap, check the clip, ring and adjustment range for your preferred carry length.

Protect the bag’s shape in transit

Ask whether the bag can be packed flat without creasing or whether it needs support inside. For a rigid or structured bag, ask the warehouse how it will protect the corners and frame.

Check whether a bag will fit over your suitcase handle

A luggage sleeve is a panel on the back of a bag that slides over a suitcase’s extended handle. Samsonite calls this feature a SmartSleeve on some models. Look for a rear photo of the exact bag and ask the seller to show both openings of the sleeve so you can see how it mounts.

Measure the widest part of your extended handle that has to pass through the sleeve, including its grip. Ask for the narrowest usable width of the sleeve and compare the two. Check which way the bag will sit once mounted. If you often reach for a passport or charger in transit, check whether the relevant pocket stays accessible when the bag rests on the suitcase.

Bags & Backpacks FAQ

What should I check if I need a bag for rainy commutes?

Check whether the water-resistance claim applies to the whole bag or just the fabric. Ask about the seams, main closure and external pockets. A water-resistant outer fabric tells you little about how much rain the openings can keep out.

How can I check whether a backpack will fit under a seat?

Measure the bag when packed, including bulging pockets and any rigid frame. If you are flying, compare those dimensions with the current personal-item rules for your airline and fare. A capacity listed in liters does not tell you the external shape.

How can I compare two bags for daily carrying weight?

Ask for each bag’s empty weight with the straps and accessories you plan to use. Then add the weight of your usual contents. A lighter-looking bag may still weigh more because of its frame, lining or hardware.
