Sneaker sizing and QC guide

Match the size system

Start with a pair that fits and note the size system printed on its tag. If the listing offers an insole measurement, compare it with the removable insole from your own pair using the same heel-to-toe method. Keep foot length and insole length as separate measurements.

Compare the toe and heel from the same angle

Put the listing and inspection photos side by side. Look at the space above the toes, the heel shape and the outsole tread. For a pair with mixed materials or colors, ask for a straight-on photo of both shoes together.

Decide if you need the original box

Tell the warehouse if the retail box matters to you. If you can ship without it, ask how the shoes would be protected and compare the packed dimensions before choosing a route.

Check a sneaker’s waterproof claim before buying

Look up the exact shoe version in the manufacturer’s specifications. A waterproof version can look like the regular version in a listing photo. GORE-TEX describes waterproof shoe designs that use a separate lining or bond a waterproof layer directly to the upper. Ask the seller which version the listing includes and check the model code on the box label.

For rainy walks, also look at the height and shape of the opening around the ankle. Water can enter through the top even when the material below it is waterproof. If you often walk on wet pavement, check what the manufacturer says about outsole grip on wet surfaces.

Sneakers FAQ

How can I tell whether a sneaker comes in a wide fit?

Look for a separate width option for the exact model. Width codes can mean different things across size ranges. If the listing only shows a shoe size, ask the seller for the width option instead of assuming that a larger size will give you the same fit.

What does heel drop mean on a running shoe?

Heel drop is the height difference between the heel and the forefoot. Stack height describes how much material sits under each part of the foot. Two shoes can have the same drop and different stack heights, so compare both specifications if you want a feel similar to your current pair.

How can I check whether the insoles are removable?

Ask for a photo of the insole lifted out of the shoe. If you plan to use your own insert, compare its thickness and outline with the original. A thicker insert can leave less room above the foot even when the shoe length looks right.
