Buying guide
Button a pair of jeans that fits and lay it flat without pulling the waistband. Measure straight across. Confirm whether the listing uses that flat width or a full waist measurement before comparing numbers.
Measure the front rise from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband. Measure the inseam along the inside of the leg from crotch to hem. Compare both with a pair that fits you well.
Check both front and back photos of the selected color. Look at fading around the seams and pockets. For stretch denim, ask for the fiber label and compare the measurements with a pair of similar stretch.
Product research
Stretch describes how far fabric can extend under tension. Recovery describes how closely it returns to its starting dimensions after the tension is removed. Fabric that stays longer after stretching can leave extra room at the knees or seat. The fiber label tells you the blend, so ask separately about the behavior of the exact denim.
When comparing two listings, ask whether the stretch goes across the leg, along it or in both directions. If the seller gives a stretch or recovery figure, ask how it was measured and which direction was tested. Compare results from equivalent tests. This is more useful than comparing two percentages from different measurement methods.
ASTM D3107 fabric stretch and recovery test methods
Ask whether the exact model was prewashed or preshrunk, and whether the chart gives measurements before or after washing. If the seller says the denim is shrink-to-fit, use that model’s care and sizing instructions. The expected change depends on the fabric and how it is washed and dried.
Levi’s shrink-to-fit sizing example
Compare widths at the thigh, knee and hem at the same points on both pairs. A taper narrows toward the hem. Knowing the knee width helps distinguish a roomy thigh with a narrow ankle from a leg that is slim throughout.
Ask for the usable pocket depth from the opening to the bottom and compare it with your phone and case. The outside shape of a front pocket gives little information about the size of the pocket bag sewn inside.
